Mr. Adams did a wonderful presentation on famous African American inventors. The children had a wonderful time and even got to make a tasty snack in the shape of a traffic light.
Jamei's parents, Ms. Tamm and Ms. Lyons, came in during his week as "Star Student" and taught us how to play his favorite card game, War and read a wonderful book called If I Ran the Circus by Dr. Seuss. Then the children did a fun art activity and each received adorable circus themed finger puppets.
During Jayne's week as Student of the week, her mom, Mrs. Ritter, invited us to her classroom and we participated in a Reader's Theater version of Goldilocks called Goldilocks goes to Wardlaw( 1M actually wrote the story and Mrs. Ritter created a play based on it and also created a power point version too)The children got to perform on the risers. The children had an enchanting time!
We have been having an enchanting time reading many different fairy tales in our fairy tale unit. We have read many different versions of The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Cinderella. We have been comparing and contrasting different versions and characters. We learned the elements of a fairy tale, the rising and falling action of a story, and identifies the problem and solution of a story. The children have been having a magical time acting out different fairy tales in Reader's Theater. They have been practicing using expression and changing their voices to match the character's voice. We made a cottage in our room and even a castle too!
We have been busy working on our long vowel words. I hope that you got a chance to go onto Spelling City. The games to play with our Spelling words are a lot of fun. Last week we learned about contractions and actually "operated" on contractions during our Operation Contractions activity. The children took a card with words such as can not on it and then cut off the letters that were not needed and used a band-aid for an apostrophe. They LOVED it!
In Math, we finished up our Place Value unit. The children used Base Ten blocks, played Race to 100, and a fun game with dice called Junk Math. We recently started our Geometry unit. We have been working with 2D shapes and pattern blocks. We learned about symmetry and how shapes can be congruent and Polygons. We also have been using geoboards too. We used a fun app called Shape-O on the IPads.
In Science, we are having a terrific time learning all about penguins. We did an interesting activity to see how blubber keeps penguins warm. We also learned about different kinds of penguins and where they live. We have been reading non-fiction books about penguins during Science and in our reading groups. We used the Smartboard to play some fun penguin trivia and fact/opinion activities.
Our trip to Jenkinson's Aquarium is on Monday, 2/27. The children need to bring a brown bag lunch and they can wear black and white in honor of the penguins! I picked three names from a hat to chaperone. I will contact you and let you know if you were picked. There will be another trip in the spring so if you were not picked you can come on that trip. :)
Enjoy the rest of the week!
