What have the 1M O.W.L.S Been Up To?

We had a very exciting week! The authors and illustrators in Class 1M did such a fabulous job at their first publishing party! They did an excellent job writing their books and they were so happy that you were all there to hear them! I was so proud of them! The children worked hard on their book talks too. I emailed their book talks to you so you could save them. Here are some pics of the Publishing Party!

In Reading we have been working on identifying the Main Idea and Details of non-fiction stories. We have also been working on distinguishing between facts and opinions. In our Guided Reading groups we have been reading non-fiction stories about hibernation and bears. We have also been reading many wonderful fiction and non-fiction books about bears.  We have also been working on the parts of speech, long a and long i, antonyms and synonyms. We also started making text-to-self connections, which is when something in a book reminds us of something that happened to either us or someone we know.

In Writing we are working on writing facts and continuing to use proper writing mechanics in our pieces. We have started to write non-fiction books about bears. As a class we came up with four topics for chapters. Then each child chose a specific bear to write about. We will continue working on these bear books this week.

We used a really neat app on the Ipads. It was called photo Card Lite. Each child selected a photo of their favorite bear. Then they wrote to their parents and they had to include at least two facts and a video recording with an additional fact. I emailed them to you from the Ipads. Please let me know if you were unable to open/read it.

In Science we have been learning about the three types of clouds and we have been busy observing the clouds and the weather. We learned about rain gauges and we used a rain gauge to measure the amount of rainfall over two days. It was neat!

On Wednesday, January 25th, we will have our Teddy Bear Sleepover! Please make sure your child brings one bear to school. The bears will hibernate in our classroom and stay overnight. Stop by on Thursday to see what mischief the bears get into... If your child does not have a bear please let me know. I will have extras on hand if anyone forgets.

On Monday Annie's mom, Mrs. Gu, came in and did a wonderful presentation about Chinese New Year for both First Grade classes. The children enjoyed learning all about Chinses New Year and the customs and celebrations that are a part of it. They each recieved a red envelope with a golden chocolate coin. The red envelope sumbolizes good luck!

Listen to our book talks below!!!!! Enjoy!!!

Have a great week!
