We had such a great first two weeks in First Grade! The children had a blast getting to know each other and learning the classroom routines, rules, and school rules.
Our theme this week was Friendship. Our poem of the week was about friends and we read My Friends by Taro Gomi, which is a wonderful story that is about a girl that learns many new things from her friends. We wrote about what our friends have taught us. Today we got together with 1J and we paired the children up. Then they used a double bubble (Venn Diagram) to compare/contrast themselves and their friends. At the end of the activity the children shared what they learned about their partner. It was a lot of fun!
In Reading we have been working on the routines involved in Reading Workshop. We reviewed the consonant sounds, rhyming words, differentiating between vowels, and consonants, clapped out syllables, and we talked about What Good Readers Do.We also began the short a sound. We learned that good readers point to the words when they read(and we used a martian finger and a magic wand to practice!), use the pictures to help them read, cross-check the pictures with the word, use patterns, and we learned how to take a picture walk. The children went book shopping in our classroom library and got their Reading Tool Kits. Ask them to tell you about it! We began working in Literacy Centers this week. We worked in the Listening Center, used magnetic letters, stamped the missing letters, and we stamped words that rhyme with at and am. We also did a sound sort activity. We also looked for patterns in books. The children had fun and did a great job. We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Alphabet Rescue, Cookie's Week, I Like Me, and A My Name is Alice.
To kick off our first Author Study we read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and talked about our names. We counted the vowels and consonants, clapped out the syllables, graphed the number of letters in our names, and decorated our names and then thought of things that began with the first letter of our name. We shared why and how our names were picked for us! Thank you so much for sending that in! We had fun sharing! During the next few weeks we will read many more books by Kevin Henkes.
In Math we worked on counting by 1's and 5's, number formation, more/less, and tally marks. We played Number Line Squeeze, Top It, and Dice Tally Roll to reinforce the concepts taught. This week we started our unit on Patterns. We used pattern blocks, cubes, links, junk boxes, and other manipulatives to work on patterning.
In Writing we worked on letter formation, directionality, spacing, and using four colors in our pictures. We began writing our All About Me books. We also wrote a class book based on Cookie's Week. We also wrote silly sentences using alliteration.
Have a great weekend!!!
